Tiébéna Dagnogo has been a key figure of the West African art scene since the mid-1990s. Keen to experiment with different media, he found his distinctive approach in the fusion of sculpture and painting. In doing so, he recycles historically-charged material, takes it apart, grinds, saws, hammers, staples and paints away at it – occasionally toasting it with a Bunsen burner for good measure. Inspired by Dogon door leaves, Tiébéna continues to work on wooden pictorial objects, which project into space in the manner of a relief.
